a supply store goes up in flames, why a fitness center had to be evacuated. and giants fans may have a chance to get world series tickets. very mild temperatures around the bay area. a heat wave coming our way. and good morning everyone, it's tuesday october 6th i'm michelle griego. >> hi i'm frank mallicoat time is 6 and we begin with breaking news. traffic at a standstill on highway 101 in sunnyvale. it's a mess, we have live pictures from the scene. this is about a mile before you get to the lance expressway. it is in the northbound lanes. a multi vehicle crash. we're hearing major injuries were involved as well. three left lanes are involved. some traffic was able to squeeze baby in the far right lane. they have to get a number of cars on them.

one car is stuck in the mud. highway 85 or maybe some side streets in the area. some of the expressways n. in the meanwhile let's go to the map. we're getting word of the new problem in that general area. southbound 101 approaching the guadalupe parkway. four cars involved in that crash. also blocking lanes, so basically avoid that area. it is a mess. that's a check of traffic. back to you guys. thank you. happening right now in san carlos, firefighters are mopping up and checking for hot spots after a fast moving fire sweeps through a restaurant supply store. the store is on old county road. fire broke out around 12:30. crews say the damage could have been worse had it not been for the building sprinkler system. >> we were notified bit sprinkler activating inside. had their not been a sprinkler system this would have been a much bigger fire. >> firefighters did manage to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading to

nearby buildings. a 24 hour fitness next door was evacuated as a precaution. crews are on the scene after putting out a house fire in san francisco. it started at the back of the building at the bay view hunters point building. a rear bedroom was damaged. everyone got out safely and they kept the flames from spreading to adjacent homes. it's been more than 24 hours since a pilot and his plan went missing after taking off from half-moon bay. the single engine plane left around 6 in the morning yesterday. the pilot heading down to tucson arizona but never made it. the plane is similar to this one here with a tail number n72ah. it is registered to man bay the name of of andrew haden out of florida. his wife reported him missing after the plane didn't make a fuel stop in apple valley. four separate shootings in oakland in one afternoon and evening. six people are injured. the most serious incident happened just before 10 last

night in east oakland. one victim has critical injuries. earlier two other people were shot in east oakland. in addition one person was wounded near lake merritt and they are all in stable condition. a court appointed monitor has harsh words saying department leaders are backsliding on reform efforts. robert warshaw says police have failed to provide oversight on a number of issues. they're not using data available to identify and discipline problem officers. george mitchell will oversea talks on the san bruno pipeline. he'll mediate negotiations between pg&e and the state and others. they face millions in fines. he e led the investigation into baseball's steroid scandal. well, the giants are back in the national league championship series. >> they got a game, the cards

debate. it will feature 80 randomly selected voters in the audience. all of them will have questions prepared but only eleven will get to ask them. >> it's going to be fun to watch. >> reporter: mitt romney is coming off what many consider a win in the first debate. he spent monday in boston working with ohio senator rob portman who's been playing president obama in debate preps. >> how did it go senator? >> great. >> reporter: president obama spent the day in williamsburg virginia. he promised to be more aggressive in refuting the claims. political analysts warn that because voters will ask the questions, being too aggressive could be seen as negative. >> it's a difficult type of performance to prepare for. >> reporter: the moderator plans to take an active role and that has both campaigns concerned. >> this will be a different president come tuesday. >> how so. >> reporter: candy crowley says she plans to ask follow up questions if the candidates

fail to ask the original question or if there needs to be a clarification. but they came to a mutual agreement that the moderator not ask new questions or raise new topics. both voiced concerns to the chairman of the commission on presidential debates. he says she is not bound by any agreements reached between the campaigns. one veteran politician says the pressure is on obama because of the poor showing but there's also pressure on mitt romney to make sure he has a strong showing tonight and maintain the momentum he's gained. i'm randall pinkston. back to you michelle. >> this has to be a hot ticket to get into the town hall debate. how was it decided? >> reporter: the people who will be participating in the town hall were selected by the gallop organization. it was contacted by the presidential debate commission that they take undecided voters who will prepare their own

pretty well. this guy is stupid. overnight the first batch of names was released in maine of men accused of paying a fitness instructor for sex. she's charged of running a prostitution operation in her dance studio. now police have released 21 names after a judge refused to block the disclosure. 150 men are suspected of being clients. san francisco supervisors who tried and failed oust, are tackling domestic violence in the workplace. a proposed policy will show if someone shows up to work with suspicious injuries. supervisors eric march and cow hen plan to introduce legislation today. the program looked as though it would be scratched earlier this year due to lack of money. 7million in funding is now

potentially available. that money is coming from the san francisco municipal transportation agency. it will be put for a vote later this month. it is 6:16. let's toss to traffic. a bad injury accident in northbound 101. >> the latest is traffic is backed up for 4 miles the in the northbound lanes and growing. this is the scene. it's northbound 101. it's on the approach to the lawrence expressway. you can see the flares set up. one lane is getting by. squeezing through in the far right lane. the three left lanes are blocked. tow crews are out there but they have to get one car still on that tow. this could take a while to clear and as you can see police are out there continuing their investigation. there were major injuries for at least one person in that accident. 280/85 side roads, expressway, call train maybe a great option to avoid that area. you can see the backups extend

you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news this morning. good morning everyone it's tuesday october 16th. i'm frank mallicoat. >> and i'm michelle griego. breaking news this morning, they're starting to open lanes on highway 101 in sunnyvale. >> but the traffic still a crawl down that way. let's go to liz and get the latest. the latest is the backups are extending beyond 4 miles. we just got off the phone. they were able to reopen one more lane. you can see the two far right lanes are open but they still

haven't closed off the two left lanes where they have that flare pattern set up and they have to get a number of cars onto tow trucks so four cars total and one car was completely destroyed obviously in that crash. major injuries are involved so the investigation may take quite a while longer. they don't have an estimated time yet when they're going to be able to fully reopen freeway. in the meantime traffic is stacking up. for 4 miles and growing, it extends to 880. if you can avoid 101, use 280, highway 105. side roads or expressways or caltrain would be a great option. in the meantime back to you guys. new this morning, a fast moving fire sweeps through a restaurant supply store in san carlos. the store is on old county road. it broke out around 12:30. firefighters did manage to get the fire under control and stop

guarded condition. earlier two other people were shot also in east oakland and another person was wounded near lake merritt and another in the telem is scal neighborhood. marcy keelin is expected to enter a plea. she tried to shoplift from a morgan hill safeway last month. after her daughter was caught, she left with her 11-month-old son and male companion. she was arrested days later in nevada. the daughter is now in her grandmother's care. new jersey police are investigate claims from new york giants football players who say they had their cars broken into during their game on sunday. according to police while the giants were plague the 49ers -- playing the 49ers in san francisco, they gained access to the lot where they park their cars in new jersey. thieves stole a 1996 chevy owned by a giant's player. they haven't released the names

endeavour's trip through l-. well, check out this speedy version o of the shuttle endeavor's trip through la. the 12-mile trip took more than two days but this video is just 2 minutes long. the shuttle was moved to a science center where it will be put on display. and star wars fans, they may be a little disappointed to know that a recently discovered planet topped the fictional part. it has four suns two more than luke sky walkers planet from the sifi saga. a scientist identified the new planet and so far we know it's about the size of neptune and has a radius six times greater than earth.

east bay temperatures running up well into the 80s. inland 86 degrees. 84 in the napa valley. and 77 in oakland. 76 in san francisco and about 85 in santa rosa. looks like the next couple of days the heat wave kicks into full gear wednesday and thursday and could bring clouds, much cooler temperatures expected for the weekend. we'll go back out toward the peninsula. we're seeing gridlock from downtown san jose to sunnyvale. this is a reason why a live look of the multi vehicle crash was reported almost two hours ago in the northbound lanes of 101. as you can see the crews are still very hard at work trying to get the cars out of the way. right now two lanes open. two lanes closed. that is the latest from chp. caltrain, 280 are going to be

better options than that 101 ride. let's look at the maps and show you the gridlock. this back up extend for 6 miles and growing. it looks like it's pushing toward old oakland road. avoid 101 if you can. getting a quick check of the bay bridge. that's about are 15 minutes earlier than they usually do. and there was no reason while there are bigger back up the at this time of the morning than we usually see. it extends into the mcarthur maze already this morning. cost of living adjustments will be smaller next year for people on citizen and higher gas prices help drive up the consumer price index for the second straight month. here's jason brooks with cbsmoneywatch.com. >> this is going to be one of the smallest quotas that social security recipients have seen in quite some time.

amazon is gearing up for its busiest time of the year by hiring lots of seasonal employees. the online retailer says it will be hiring 50,000 temporary workers at its order fulfillment centers across the country. they also expect that thousands of the workers will stay on full-time after the holiday rush. other major retailers also hiring seasonal workers include macy's wal-mart and toys "r" us. we're going to stick with that theme with amazon. do you plan to do your holiday shopping in the store on online. best buy is hoping to keep up with its competitor by price matching amazon this holiday season and sharon beckman joins us with more on that. and brick and mortar scores are like are you kidding me, give me a break. >> not doing too well. in august we learned they're down 91% in profit. it's no surprise that now they're trying to beef up their business and do something different in order to attract a new set of customers.

what they're doing this holiday season according to the wall street journal is actually price matching amazon. now, it's no secret that many people walk into best buy, get their hands on products, get a feel for them and go online to buy those products for lower prices. >> you shop there first, get a feel for the price and go to amazon. >> that's what best buy is trying to avoid. we can look at a few prices and see how. >> yeah, let's compare. >> your standard monster hdmi cable, best buy sells it for 60 bucks, amazon 10.99. that's a pretty good deal. we can also take a look at a sam sung smart tv, best buy $1000, amazon, 998. you don't see a huge price difference and the customer may say it's worth it for me to go into the store and buy it right

welcome back, when we continue to follow the breaks traffic news along the peninsula, northbound 101 in sunnyvale, you can see tow crews still hard at work trying to reopen lanes right before the lawrence expressway, two lanes remain shut down, two lanes are open, the backup extend for six to eight miles. in the back up we have cbs5 reporter elissa harrington. have you been stuck there for a while. are you anywhere close. >> i'm getting close. i can tell you i got off on antomas expressway and thought it would be an easy turn
